When someone arrives in Bükk for the first time, they often ask the same question:
“Where should we go?” I always smile at such times.
I've been walking these trails since I was a kid. I know which springs have the coldest water, where to stop to watch the sunset, and which trails look easy on the map but have tricked many people in real life.
Bükk is beautiful, but it's not a game. If you're going there for the first time, there are a few things you should know.
The Bükk is not just a forest - it is a whole world.
Many people think that the Bükk is “just a big forest.” In fact, it is a vast mountain system, full of smaller valleys, plateaus, cliffs, and secluded trails.
Each route takes you to a completely different atmosphere in just a few minutes: from a shady beech forest to a sunny rock wall, and from there to a quiet clearing.
That's why it's easy to immerse yourself in nature a little more than you planned.
It's no coincidence that many of our guests say, "We started out for one hour and it turned into three."
The first rule: don't start with the longest hike
The most common mistake I see is someone choosing a long hike on the first day. In the Bükk, it's better to explore the area gradually.
Start with an easier route. A shorter panoramic walk.
This way you can feel the terrain, the differences in elevation, and also how fast you are going on the forest roads.
Always Follow the Trail Markers
The hiking trails in the Bükk Mountains are well marked, but there are occasional intersections where several paths meet.
Whenever you set out on a hike, it's worth paying attention to three things: the trail markers painted on the trees, the directions shown on the hiking signposts, and where you last saw a trail marker.
With just a little attention, it's almost impossible to get lost.
The Most Beautiful Places Often Aren't on the Map
One of the unique features of the Bükk Mountains is the number of hidden spots that most visitors never discover.
A small rocky ledge overlooking a valley. A spring reached only by a narrow footpath. A panoramic viewpoint where you might not meet another person.
I discovered many of these places as a child, and I still return to them today. I often recommend these hidden gems to our guests-and if they're interested, I'm always happy to take them there myself.
Hiking Isn't About Performance - It's About the Experience
One of the greatest lessons the Bükk Mountains teach is how to slow down. There's no need to rush. There's no need to break records
A comfortable pace, fresh mountain air, and an occasional stop are all you need. At a scenic viewpoint. By a spring. Or simply in a quiet forest clearing.
Everything Is Within Easy Reach from Kikelet
One of the greatest advantages of Kikelet Club Hotel is its location right on the edge of the forest. Within just a few minutes' walk, you'll reach hiking trails leading to some of the most beautiful parts of the Bükk Mountains.
When guests arrive, I often ask them, "What kind of hike would you enjoy?" A short walk? A scenic route with panoramic views? Or a more challenging mountain hike?
And we always find a trail that's just right. If you'd like to discover the true beauty of the Bükk Mountains, there's always a perfect route waiting.
The Bükk Is More Than Just a Hiking Destination
It's a landscape that reveals a different side of itself every time you visit. If you stay at Kikelet, I'd be delighted to show you some of my own favorite trails. One of them may soon become your favorite place too.
Hiking doesn't have to be complicated—you simply have to take the first step. Choose one of the easy hiking trails in the Bükk Mountains, enjoy your first walks at your own pace, and afterwards relax at Kikelet in Miskolctapolca, where peaceful nature surrounds you.
