Programme recommendationSzeleta Park Visitor Center

The Szeleta Park Visitor Center in Miskolc is the newest exhibition space of the Bükk National Park Directorate. The Bükk Mountains are the namesake of the Bükk National Park Directorate, which was established in 1977, and are also one of its most valuable areas. The Szeleta Park exhibition “The Millennial Secrets of the Bükk Caves – The Nature of Primitive Man” presents:

  • the natural treasures of the Bükk,
  • its special geological history,
  • its unique hydrography and cave system,
  • the hive stones,
  • the typical flora and fauna of the mountains,
  • and the world-famous Szeleta culture,
  • the on-site results of the cradle of Hungarian paleontology.

All this is done not only graphically, but also through interactive interfaces and 2-/3D films. The topics are reflected in the environmental education modules of the visitor center, which are intended for primary and secondary school children in the area. An activity room is available for these occasions.

The indoor Stone Age Karst Adventure play house in the building was created for the 5–12 age group. Children can descend into the "Doline Pit", venture through a multi-level tunnel system, and observe the wildlife of the Bükk Mountains along the way. During their discoveries they can meet the sabre-toothed tiger and also try their hand at archaeology. On the square in front of the facility, the Bikkmakk playground awaits the little ones, and in the park accessible with a ticket, the Pókfonal (Spider's Thread) playground.

While the children play, adults can refresh themselves and have a snack in the Szeleta Park bistro. The thematic offer of the gift shop is complemented by the Bükk National Park Trademark product, and the novel "The Stone Axe Man", reissued on the occasion of the opening of the visitor center, is also available for purchase.
