Miskolc's city centre preserves the atmosphere of the historic old town, and its central axis is Széchenyi István Street, which locals often simply call the Main Street. Evoking a 19th-century urban feel, the pedestrian street is still one of the liveliest parts of the city centre today, with shops, cafés, a theatre and old townhouses. Széchenyi Street is part of a longer chain of streets crossing Miskolc from east to west, often referred to as one of Europe's remarkable main streets, at 12 kilometres long.
