The Miskolc National Theatre is the first stone theatre in present-day Hungary. The old building was destroyed in the great fire of 1843, and the new theatre, built on the corner of Déryné Street and Széchenyi Street, was completed by September 1857. From then on, the companies of the best provincial theatre directors performed in the city. Through the major reconstruction carried out in the 1990s, one of Central Europe's most complex theatre complexes was created in Miskolc.
